Modular Bridging Solution Provides Access For Welsh Whiskey Distillery

Rapid replacement of ageing concrete bridge maintains business in rural area

Aber Falls Distillery sits at the foot of the famous Aber Falls waterfall, at the gateway to the National Park of Snowdonia. Originally a slate works in the 19th century and later a margarine factory, the now drinks wholesaler is well known for its specially crafted whisky using Welsh ingredients from the surrounding areas. Prior to 2021, an old steel beam and concrete bridge over a river was the only access point to the distillery. When this bridge became at risk of collapse, as a result of flood damages to the bridge abutments, it was vital to replace the structure as quickly as possible for safety and commercial reasons.

Modular steel bridges are versatile, configurable, and easily transported in standard containers, making them the perfect solution for projects in rural areas. The new single-span bridge was lifted into place by a 75t crane. Measuring 9.14 metres long by 4.2 metres wide, the new Compact 200® (C200®) solution boasts P2 parapets and anti-skid decks – ideal for vehicle and pedestrian access.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the installation team and Wolfenden Engineering, with the expertise of a specialist Site Advisor, the bridge connection was restored in 2 days.  The Aber Falls Distillery is now safely accessible to both employees and visitors to the site. The decision to purchase a modular bridge proved beneficial to the client, as the ease of assembly of the components and quick installation ensured minimal disruption to business.
