Temporary Bridges Feature on Major Causeway Reconstruction for Ohio Amusement Park

Acrow’s modular steel structures support traffic and maintain visitor access to Cedar Point, Sandusky

Operated by Six Flags, Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, is the second-oldest amusement park in the United States. Established in 1870, the 364-acre park attracts millions of visitors each year and has been accessed via an almost one-mile-long causeway linking the Lake Erie peninsula to the mainland since 1957. Necessary reconstruction and expansion of this route was scheduled for fall 2026, leading project officials to select two Acrow bridges to span existing causeway structures and ensure uninterrupted visitor access during the 2026 operating season. Both temporary bridges accommodate two lanes of traffic to maintain and improve transport until the larger infrastructure improvement project proceeds.

Project contractor, Kokosing Construction Company, contacted Acrow in early March 2026 with an accelerated installation schedule dictated by the park’s opening day, May 9. Components of the rented bridge began arriving at the site in late March, and assembly of the first structure commenced within days. An Acrow field service representative was at the site to provide technical guidance throughout the installation process.

Once a concrete pedestal was poured to establish the required elevation, the first bridge was moved into position on its bearings just 10 days after assembly began. The decks and guardrails were added to complete the structure as work progressed in parallel on the second bridge, which was placed on its bearings on April 15. Both structures opened to traffic before Cedar Point’s scheduled opening date and shall remain in service through late fall 2026.

Each two-lane bridge is 110 feet (33.53m) long. One structure is 20 feet (6.1m) wide and includes a footwalk for utilities, while the other is 24 feet (7.35m) wide with a partial footwalk for signage. The bridges feature asphalt overlay deck surfaces and were designed to AASHTO HL-93 loading.

With an accelerated project schedule and a fixed opening-day deadline, Acrow’s modular steel bridges provided a dependable solution that could be delivered and installed quickly without compromising safety or performance.
