In 1980, flooding of the Ganaraska River devastated the downtown of the Municipality of Port Hope in southern Ontario and destroyed the existing bridge. In order to restore safe passage as quickly as possible, an emergency single-lane bridge was installed as a temporary solution while the search for a permanent replacement began.

Over the course of many years, different types of permanent structures were considered to replace the old bridge. A two-lane Acrow bridge was finally chosen by the citizens of Port Hope. They thought the structure’s appearance was most suitable for the prominent downtown site, as well as being the most cost-effective solution.

The foundations for the new structure were started immediately upon removal of the old bridge in May 2017. Assembly and installation of Acrow’s prefabricated modular steel bridge, measuring 110 feet (33.53m) long by 30 feet (9.15m) wide, followed shortly after and was completed in two months. The new, wider bridge improves traffic flow and includes a safer asphalt driving surface. Acrow also provided highway-rated guide rails for the approach roads to match the guide rails on the new bridge.
