(Parsippany, New Jersey) – 30 October 2025 – Acrow, a leading international bridge engineering and supply company, noted today one of its modular steel bridges has been installed to carry vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists over the Tioughnioga River on U.S. Route 11 in the Village of Whitney Point, NY. The detour structure will minimize inconvenience during a project to replace an aging bridge on the regionally important route.

In addition to serving as a vital link for area residents and visitors, the U.S. Route 11 bridge provides key access to Interstate 81 and several major state routes. Originally built in 1947, the existing structure was approaching the end of its service life and had been placed on New York State’s High-Risk Flood Watch list, requiring continuous monitoring when water levels reached a specified threshold. As part of a broader initiative to improve infrastructure and pedestrian safety, the decision was made to replace the bridge with a more resilient design. Maintaining the route during the construction was deemed essential, and a safe, reliable detour bridge from Acrow was chosen to meet that need.

Acrow’s bridge was designed by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) design team and rented to project contractor Economy Paving of Cortland, NY. The three-span structure has a length of 340 feet (103.63m), with a two-lane roadway width of 30 feet (9.15m) plus a 5-foot (1.5m) cantilevered footwalk. Despite the structure’s large size, the multi-span design allowed for a relatively short 70-foot (21.34m) launch nose during installation. To minimize push weight, the bridge was launched without the deck, bridge rail or footwalk in place. Despite these measures, the total push weight approached 600,000 pounds.

Following installation, the structure was finished with an asphalt overlay deck, and the rail and footwalk were completed. The temporary detour bridge opened to traffic in May 2025 and will be in place until construction on the new permanent structure is completed, now expected to be late 2026.
